Wild Animals are Everywhere
Take A Breath
- Watch the one of the videos's below as an introduction to the topic of basic needs.
- Ask the students questions about the types of animals and their habitats
- Scaffold their questions to lead them towards the idea that all animals need shelter, food, water and air
- Discuss that humans have needs too. Compare these needs to the needs of the animals.
- Have students complete a poster showing what they have learnt about basic needs.
- There are lots of other activities that can then be done after this.

Science Strand:
Biological Science
Living things have basic needs, including food and water
Elaborations:
Biological Science
Living things have basic needs, including food and water
Elaborations:
- identifying the needs of humans such as warmth, food and water, using students’ own experiences.
- recognising the needs of living things in a range of situations such as pets at home, plants in the garden or plants and animals in bushland.
- comparing the needs of plants and animals.
Science as Human Endeavour:
Nature and Development of Science
Science involves exploring and observing the world using the senses
Elaborations:
Nature and Development of Science
Science involves exploring and observing the world using the senses
Elaborations:
- recognising that observation is an important part of exploring and investigating the things and places around us.
- sharing observations with others and communicating their experiences.
- exploring and observing using hearing, smell, touch, seeing and taste.
Science Inquiry Skills:
Questioning and predicting
Respond to questions about familiar objects and events.
Planning and conducting
Explore and make observations by using the senses.
Processing and analysing data and information
Engage in discussions about observations and use methods such as drawing to represent ideas.
Communicating
Share observations and ideas.

General capabilities and cross‑ curriculum priorities:
Literacy
Students are creating posters
Critical and creative thinking
The students are reasoning and evaluating what constitutes the needs of a living thing
Personal and social capability
The students are exploring personal and social competence in relation to the responsibilities of meeting the needs of living things, e.g. pets
Sustainability
They are beginning to develop an awareness of the needs of living things and begin to explore and investigate how the environment supports life
