Explain that shadows happen when there is an object between the light source and the surface that will block light and keep it from continuing on its path.
Set up a sheet for a background outside. The sun will be the light source. Have the students make shadows.
When the students are inside do the experiment again with a lamp, explaining that the sun is not the only source of light capable of making shadows.
