This activity would encourage students to learn about and appreciate the differences in families. Some students may have siblings; some may be a single child. Some students might have two mums or two dads. Others might live have divorced parents or live with grandparents. By doing this activity the students will begin to learn about diversity and how to accept different ways of living. This is an important thing to learn as we live in a very diverse world and we need to be accepting of a lot of different cultures and life styles.
This is an activity that I would incorporate into a VELS level 2 classroom. As an additional activity I would have a world map and have the student’s map where they or their ancestors come from on the map. This is all so students can learn about diversity. You could also have students’ interview relatives or have family members such as grandparents come into the school on a family day to tell students stories about what it was like for them growing up and have students look at the differences to their own lives.
