With the class look at different materials and discuss how they are used.

Discuss recycling, what can we recycle, what can’t we?

Focus the direction of the discussion towards paper.

Introduce the activity which is to make recycled paper.

Have the students do the activity as it is outlined in the link below.

This is a great demonstrative experiment for this level of chemical sciences which also incorporates art.

Students identify some common materials found in objects around the classroom and explore why these materials have been selected for that use.

Students are asked to  locate objects made out of a specific material then draw the object and describe why they thought that material had been chosen.

Explain to the class that we can change the shapes of some objects. Use Play Dough as an example.

Follow the instructions to make play dough with the class.

You could tie this experiment in with another topic or books read in class and have the students make sculptures with the play dough of characters in the book.

Ask students what they think would happen if chocolate was left outside in the sun.

Then perform the experiment testing how long it takes the chocolate to melt. Try this in the shade and in the sun.

After ten minutes look to see if the chocolate is melted, if not record how soft it is.

Discuss as a class the reason why the chocolate has melted.

You can perform this experiment in other ways as well such as recording how long it takes to melt in your mouth.

Activity:

· Students select materials from around the classroom

· They would then sort the objects according to the materials that they are made from and their properties using a table

· They then chose two properties with which to compare the materials using a Venn diagram

· Share their findings in a group discussion
