Critical and creative thinking
The students are reasoning and evaluating what constitutes the needs of a living thing
Personal and social capability
The students are exploring personal and social competence in relation to the responsibilities of meeting the needs of living things, e.g. pets

- Have students investigate what plants need to grow by growing grass heads: put grass seeds into a stocking with soil, tie a not in the stocking and place it on top of a jar filled with water. Students can also stick eyes on the stocking.
- Pose questions and get the students to predict what will happen if a grass head has no water, or if it was in the cupboard with no water. The teacher will make extra grass heads so the class can observe what happens.
- As the experiment progresses have students observe and record what happens.
Science Strand:
Biological Science
- Living things have basic needs, including food and water.
Elaborations
- identifying the needs of humans such as warmth, food and water, using students’ own experiences.
- recognising the needs of living things in a range of situations such as pets at home, plants in the garden or plants and animals in bushland.
- comparing the needs of plants and animals.
